Life Work as Art

“This world is but a canvas to our imagination.” ~ Henry David Thoreau

Sometimes when I feel overwhelmed by life, I pause to work with my plants. Digging around in the dirt, pruning, fertilizing, and just looking at how they are growing seems to help me relax and refocus. Watching the life cycle of plants, especially orchids, reminds me that change, growth, and even decay and death are part of life.

Sometimes, I feel the need to be surrounded by plants. One of my favorite places to go to be surrounded is RF Orchids in the Deep South of Miami-Dade County.

The orchids are beautiful.  I am always amazed by the varieties, colors, and sizes of the orchids in the RF Orchid’s greenhouses. I feel like I am walking around in God’s artwork. This artwork is not static. It’s constantly growing, changing, and moving through a life cycle. It’s intentional.

I am reminded that my life work is also growing, changing, and moving through a life cycle. It’s not just simply work. It’s not static either. My life work is also my artwork.

The plants cause me to think about what I am creating with my life and to consider if it’s intentional or just consequential to busyness.

  • What are you creating with your life? Such an important question, one we sometimes fail to acknowledge in the midst of so much “to do.”
